Book: A Butterfly

Dr Sean Perera is the author of A Butterfly, a queer coming-of-age young adult novel that explores identity, relationships, and culture. Set in Sri Lanka, the story follows Pathanga—whose name means butterfly, a term also used pejoratively for homosexuals—navigating family expectations, friendships, and self-discovery.

Written in four parts, A Butterfly sensitively portrays sexual awakening and the complexities of growing up LGBTQIA+ within a culturally restrictive environment. The novel offers a powerful and compassionate voice to queer experiences often left unheard.
